Study concludes there are currently only 49 true travel subscription services available in the US.

Travel metasearch website WayAway has published a definitive white paper about the travel subscriptions space titled ‘Hit that subscribe button: subscription services in the travel industry’.

In addition to creating a formal definition of how to define a travel subscription service and surveying the market to establish the current players in the US, the report also explores the history of subscription services in the travel sector and interviews experts such as Subscription Boom author Adam Levinter and eDreams founder Mauricio Prieto.

WayAway’s Director of PR, Janis Dzenis comments: “The relatively limited research we’d seen into travel subscriptions seemed to vary wildly in what was and what was not classified as either travel or a subscription – nor was much of it up-to-date or taking into account the long evolution of such services from as far back as 2011 when Usingmiles.com introduced the first plan. So we decided to set a baseline definition for the space and map out the universe of current players before conducting any analysis.

“What we found surprised us on two levels, firstly that there’s a lot less travel subscriptions services than you might think – only 49 in the US market. And secondly that so many of these are recent, from just the last few years, indicating a boom with a very clear trend for accelerated growth. We firmly believe that looking back years from now we´ll recognize that now was an inflection point.”

Havila Voyages confirms ambition for emission-free coastal sailings by 2030 – with current ships https://www.traveldailynews.com/sea-travel/cruises/havila-voyages-confirms-ambition-for-emission-free-coastal-sailings-by-2030-with-current-ships/ Mon, 05 Jun 2023 06:36:53 +0000 https://www.traveldailynews.com/?p=313990 Another goal set by Havila Voyages was to reduce onboard food waste and produce only 75 grams of food waste per person per day.

]]>
Havila Voyages has launched its first ever sustainability and human rights report. The report highlights the company’s ambitious goals of carbon neutrality by 2028 and for an emission-free coastal route by 2030 – all achievable with the current fleet.

Havila Voyages is actively working to reduce emissions and meet future environmental requirements.

“Last year, we made history as the world’s first cruise company to sail into the Geirangerfjord UNESCO World Heritage Site emission-free and silently, four years before the Norwegian government’s requirement for emission-free ferries and ships in the World Heritage areas comes into effect,” says CEO Bent Martini.

“This is clear proof of our ambitions. We look forward to continuing our journey and doing our part to make tourism and shipping more sustainable”.

Martini points out that Havila Voyages intends to become both carbon-neutral and achieve zero emissions in the future. “It starts with gradually replacing natural gas with biogas, and the goal is to be carbon-neutral by 2028. After that, we will switch to emission-free fuel alternatives such as hydrogen, and the goal is zero emissions by 2030 – with the ships we have today,” he says.

Ambitious goal achieved

Another goal set by Havila Voyages was to reduce onboard food waste and produce only 75 grams of food waste per person per day. The company’s food concept includes serving all meals à la carte and using locally sourced and short-travelled ingredients.

“Meeting our target of 75 grams of food waste across four fully operational ships, means we can reduce food waste by 60 tons per year, by not using buffets”, says Martini.

“It is therefore very gratifying to report that this year we successfully achieved our goal and collect only 71 grams of food waste per person per day on board. We have accomplished this thanks to the fantastic efforts of those who have developed our food concept, those who prepare and serve the food on board, and, not least, our guests who are made aware of the concept. And no one leaves our restaurants hungry.”

In addition, Havila Kystruten can report a high degree of waste sorting and effective circular use of resources on its ships.

Aiming to make a positive contribution

Havila Voyages’ ships, which include battery packs that enable emission-free and silent operation for 4 hours at a time, are the most environmentally friendly vessels to have ever sailed the historic coastal route Bergen – Kirkenes – Bergen. With current operations, CO2 emissions are reduced by 35-40%, and local emissions such as NOx and SOx are reduced by over 90%, compared to equivalent ships using traditional fossil fuels.

“We believe that our sustainable approach to coastal tourism and our focus on climate and the environment are a positive contribution to the transition to a zero-emission society. We look forward to continuing our journey and doing our part to make tourism and shipping more sustainable socially and environmentally,” says Martini.

“These reports help our investors, partners, employees, and customers learn more about our business and how we will continue to develop an inclusive and environmentally conscious company. Together, we will lead the way towards a greater focus on sustainability, and we aim to be among the first to achieve zero emissions,” he concluded.

SANDPOINT, ID – MKM Trust, owner and developer of Schweitzer, announces that it has agreed to sell Schweitzer’s resort operations assets to Alterra Mountain Company. Schweitzer expands Alterra’s portfolio in the Pacific Northwest, joining Crystal Mountain in Washington. The addition of Schweitzer will bring the company’s total to 17 year-round mountain destinations throughout North America.

As the only mountain resort within the MKM Trust portfolio for the past 18 years, Schweitzer has been consistently recognized as one of the region’s top ski destinations, in part due to significant strategic investments that have been made over the past several years. With room for growth and plans for future expansion and development, MKM’s decision to exit the resort operations business puts Schweitzer in a favorable position to begin a new chapter with Alterra at the helm.

“Since becoming an Ikon Pass partner in 2021, we’ve had the good fortune of learning how Alterra Mountain Company has quickly evolved into an industry leader,” said Tom Chasse, President and CEO of Schweitzer. “The company’s commitment to preserving the authenticity of their mountain communities while investing in the overall mountain experience is what we’re most looking forward to as the newest member of the Alterra family.”

Starting in the early 2000’s, over $100M in capital has been invested into Schweitzer to help fortify itself as a premier destination in the Pacific Northwest, including terrain expansion, 5 new lifts, Sky House – on-mountain day lodge, Humbird – a 31-unit boutique hotel in Schweitzer’s village, and Cambium – a brand new wellness spa.

“With an incredible mountain in one of the most beautiful settings in the country and a world-class operating team, Schweitzer has everything we look for in a destination,” said Jared Smith, President & CEO, Alterra Mountain Company. “The mountain has been a valued partner on the Ikon Pass for several seasons so we’ve been able to see the exceptional team, community, and opportunities for continued investment up close.”

Tom Chasse will stay on as President and CEO of Schweitzer and will oversee daily operations of the destination and future capital improvement plans.

The MKM Trust, which has been the owner and developer of Schweitzer for the past 18 years, will retain non-ski operations real estate holdings, and will continue to lead future real estate development projects that support the vibrancy of the Schweitzer community.

The transaction is expected to close later in 2023, and is subject to certain closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. More details will be released once the transaction has closed.

The article Unruly passenger incidents in post-pandemic increase first appeared in TravelDailyNews International.

]]>
ISTANBUL – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released a new analysis showing that reported unruly passenger incidents increased in 2022 compared to 2021. IATA called for more states to take the necessary authority to prosecute passengers under Montreal Protocol 2014 (MP14).

Latest figures show that there was one unruly incident reported for every 568 flights in 2022, up from one per 835 flights in 2021. The most common categorizations of incidents in 2022 were non-compliance, verbal abuse and intoxication. Physical abuse incidents remain very rare, but these had an alarming increase of 61% over 2021, occurring once every 17,200 flights.

“The increasing trend of unruly passenger incidents is worrying. Passengers and crew are entitled to a safe and hassle-free experience on board. For that, passengers must comply with crew instructions. While our professional crews are well trained to manage unruly passenger scenarios, it is unacceptable that rules in place for everyone’s safety are disobeyed by a small but persistent minority of passengers. There is no excuse for not following the instructions of the crew,” said Conrad Clifford, IATA’s Deputy Director General.

Although non-compliance incidents initially fell after the mask mandates were removed on most flights, the frequency began to rise again throughout 2022 and ended the year some 37% up on 2021. The most common examples of non-compliance were:

  • Smoking of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vapes and puff devices in the cabin or lavatories
  • Failure to fasten seatbelts when instructed
  • Exceeding the carry-on baggage allowance or failing to store baggage when required
  • Consumption of own alcohol on board
  • Two-pillar strategy

A two-pillar strategy is in place for the needed zero-tolerance approach to unruly behavior.

Regulation: Ensure governments have the necessary legal authority to prosecute unruly passengers, regardless of their state of origin and to have a range of enforcement measures that reflect the severity of the incident. Such powers exist in the Montreal Protocol 2014 (MP14), and IATA is urging all states to ratify this as soon as possible. To date, some 45 nations comprising 33% of international passenger traffic have ratified MP14.

Guidance to prevent and de-escalate incidents: Prevent incidents through collaboration with industry partners on the ground (such as airports, bars and restaurants and duty-free shops), including for example awareness campaigns on the consequences of unruly behavior. Additionally, sharing best practices, including training, for crew to de-escalate incidents when they occur. A new guidance document was published at the beginning of 2022 gathering best practices for airlines and providing practical solutions to governments on public awareness, spot fines, and fixing jurisdiction gaps.

Prevent incidents through collaboration with industry partners on the ground (such as airports, bars and restaurants and duty-free shops), including for example awareness campaigns on the consequences of unruly behavior. Additionally, sharing best practices, including training, for crew to de-escalate incidents when they occur. A new guidance document (pdf) was published at the beginning of 2022 gathering best practices for airlines and providing practical solutions to governments on public awareness, spot fines, and fixing jurisdiction gaps.

“In the face of rising unruly incident numbers, governments and the industry are taking more serious measures to prevent unruly passenger incidents. States are ratifying MP14 and reviewing enforcement measures, sending a clear message of deterrence by showing that they are ready to prosecute unruly behavior. For the industry’s part, there is greater collaboration. For example, as the vast majority of intoxication incidents occur from alcohol consumed prior to the flight, the support of airport bars and restaurants to ensure the responsible consumption of alcohol is particularly important.

“No one wants to stop people having a good time when they go on holiday—but we all have a responsibility to behave with respect for other passengers and the crew. For the sake of the majority, we make no apology for seeking to crack down on the bad behavior of a tiny number of travelers who can make a flight very uncomfortable for everyone else,” said Clifford.

MONTREAL – Airports Council International (ACI) World, as one of the contributing organizations, welcomes the launch of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Net Zero Roadmaps and calls for continued collaboration of aviation stakeholders in building a sustainable aviation industry.

ACI and airports have been leaders in the decarbonization transformation, being the first to commit to a long-term environmental goal of net zero carbon emissions at airports by 2050, made on 8 June 2021. This was followed by the cross-industry commitment in October 2021 and that by the ICAO States in October 2022.

The IATA Net Zero Roadmaps highlight the type of collaboration and actions needed to achieve both the aviation industries’ and governments’ goal of net zero carbon emission by 2050.

ACI World Director General Luis Felipe de Oliveira said: “We congratulate IATA on the launch of the Net Zero Roadmaps and welcome their ongoing collaboration in building a sustainable aviation sector. Airports have been leaders in the decarbonization transformation and on the front line to provide solutions. The whole aviation ecosystem needs to work together with common purpose, and we urge States, regulators, fuel producers, and the financial sector to all play their part too. The onus is on all of us so that aviation can continue to play an important role in the economic and social well-being of communities worldwide.”
